Betting Tips & Boosts on the Champions League

How much difference can a manager make? Quite a lot, it turns out. When the draw for the round of 16 was made back in December, this tie looked like a foregone conclusion; Jose Mourinho was busy making The Grinch look like Mother Theresa.

His feuds with various Manchester United stars meant the club was forced to order a bigger carpet under which they could attempt to brush the many broken relationships between manager and players.

Now, though, the Red Devils are a club transformed by Ole Gunner Solskjaer, a man who has been pre-programmed to talk about the “United way” and the “club’s DNA” every 20 minutes.

It is also notable that Paris Saint-Germain will be without star strikers Neymar and Edinson Cavani and will have to rely on the likes of Kylian Mbappe to spear-head their attack. Back over 3.5 goals at odds of 2.65 in what should be a highly entertaining first leg at Old Trafford.

Roma vs Porto

Roma only just scraped through to the knockout stage of the Champions League, winning three and losing three of their six encounters in Group G. Porto, by contrast, breezed through the first round of the competition, amassing 16 points from a possible 18 to qualify in style ahead of Schalke, Galatasaray and Lokomotiv Moscow.

Roma are so inconsistent that we are starting to wonder whether there are actually two different teams with lookalikes who fill in for the real players every other week.

You just do not know which version of the Giallorossi are going to turn up on any given day, which makes our job of predicting their results somewhat tricky. Roma did a fine job of turning up on big occasions in the Champions League last term, though, so I’m backing them to beat Porto at 2.10.

Ajax vs Real Madrid

This is a classic Champions League tie between two European giants, although the financial realities of the modern game on the continent mean that only one of the two are genuine contenders to lift the trophy this season.

No matter how bad things get for Real Madrid domestically, they seem to have a knack for coming good on the biggest stage of all. There is no better symbol of that schizophrenia than Sergio Ramos, who often looks like a rabbit in the headlights in La Liga but finds his best form for the Champions League.

Los Blancos’ defending has left a lot to be desired this year, though, so Ajax will fancy their chances of at least finding the net in front of their own fans. Back Real Madrid to win and both teams to score at Boosted Odds of 3.50.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Borussia Dortmund

For a short time a couple of weeks ago, it looked as if Mauricio Pochettino, his assistant manager Jesus Perez and the club’s tea lady would have to take to the field for an injury-hit Tottenham team against Borussia Dortmund. Some supporters would rather see the tea lady up front than Fernando Llorente, although Son Heung-min’s return from the Asian Cup means neither of the aforementioned duo are likely to get the nod up front here.

This is likely to be an open, entertaining encounter between two teams who could be dark horses in the Champions League this season. It is a tough one to call, but I would advise putting some money on over 2.5 goals and both teams to find the net – that is available at a price of 2.10.
