Chelsea vs Arsenal, La Liga, Serie A: Match Previews

The Serie A season gets under way this weekend, and although many eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of his Juventus debut, the standout fixture of matchday one pits Lazio (2.80) against Napoli (2.40).

The former missed out on the Champions League on the final day of last term and will be desperate to go one better this time around, while the latter – who finished second in 2017/18 – are now under the management of Carlo Ancelotti. This one could go either way, which is why a draw could be the best option at 3.50.

Manchester City vs Huddersfield

Manchester City (1.10) began their Premier League title defence in fantastic fashion, strolling to a 2-0 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Pep Guardiola’s side were not quite at their best last weekend but they were still comfortably better than their opponents, which is particularly impressive given that the Gunners finished sixth last term.

Huddersfield (23.00), meanwhile, lost 3-0 to Chelsea in their opening encounter and will again struggle to find the net this weekend, with goals a problem ever since their promotion to the top flight – Town made the net bulge just 28 times in 2017/18. A City win to nil looks a sure-fire bet at 1.50.

Chelsea vs Arsenal

After that defeat by Manchester City, Unai Emery’s baptism of fire continues with a trip to Stamford Bridge in the late kick-off on Saturday. Chelsea (1.85) grew stronger as the game against Huddersfield wore on, and with Eden Hazard set to return to the starting XI, they deserve their favourites tag for this London derby.

Arsenal (4.10) are still finding their feet under Emery and have traditionally struggled against Chelsea away from home, having failed to emerge victorious at the Bridge since 2011. With that in mind, consider backing the Blues to win a match featuring more than 2.5 goals in total – a wager which is available at odds of 2.60.

Valencia vs Atletico Madrid

La Liga is back and the highlight of the opening weekend features neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid. Valencia (3.00) started last season extremely well before fading away, although a fourth-place finish meant it was a successful campaign for Los Che; Atletico Madrid (2.50) finished second, meanwhile, and have enjoyed an excellent summer in the transfer market.

Diego Simeone’s side are masters at grinding out results and that could again be in evidence on Monday night, where a small flutter on a 1-0 away win could pay dividends at 8.00.

Brighton vs Manchester United

Manchester United (1.75) were not entirely convincing in their 2-1 success against Leicester last Friday, but the important thing was that they got the job done – particularly as several key players were either unavailable or not 100 per cent match fit. Brighton (5.00) will have been disappointed by their performance in a 2-0 defeat by Watford, especially as manager Chris Hughton had highlighted the need for his team to improve their away form this campaign.

Albion beat United at the Amex towards the end of 2017/18 and could again cause Jose Mourinho’s men problems, so put some money on both teams to score at 2.15.

Tottenham vs Fulham

Tottenham (1.30) were criticised for their lack of spending in the summer transfer market, but they actually deserve credit for keeping their squad intact. News that their return to White Hart Lane has been delayed has dampened the mood somewhat.

So Fulham (9.50) may fancy their chances of springing a surprise here, with the role of underdogs likely to suit the west Londoners. Spurs should still be good enough to emerge triumphant, but this will probably be a tight affair – back under 2.5 goals at 2.45.
