Midweek Football: Managers brace for the cup
We’ve got plenty of midweek football for you to get stuck into this week as managers chop and change their squads ahead of the cup matches across Europe.
Eight matches from the DFB Pokal from Germany, plus a first-leg Copa del Rey Clasico, and if that wasn’t enough, a bit of Premier League action on the side.
Everton – Manchester City (6/2/2019 – 20:45 CET)
There’s a worrying pattern beginning to emerge in Marco Silva’s managerial career in England’s top flight. His teams tend to start the new season’s under his reign well, then tail off, until he’s forced to move on to the next club looking for a suave Portuguese boss that doesn’t cost quite as much as Jose Mourinho.
It’s that time of the season again for Marco and it’s the toffee’s that find themselves going through a sticky patch.
We’re positive he’ll come good in the long run, he may just have to wait a week or so until City are done with them, though.

Dortmund – Werder Bremen (5/2/2019 – 20:45 CET)
Germany’s premier cup competition continues this midweek with matches being played over Tuesday and Wednesday.
The fact that Dortmund are seven points clear in the Bundesliga may work against the mid-table outfit, who were probably hoping BVB would rest a few players.
If they do, expect a tight game that could go either way.

RB Leipzig – Wolfsburg (6/2/2019 – 18:30 CET)
This should be a decent cup tie given the similar circumstances of both sides. Only two places separate them in the league – Leipzig sit fourth while Wolfsburg are back in sixth – and will both have one eye on the European places, and what a cup run may mean for an extended run, come season end.
Obviously, the stakes are higher for Leipzig, who will miss out on a small fortune should they squander their five-point lead over fifth place Bayer, while Wolfsburg have about five teams hot on their heels for their slot in the Europa League.
Given that money talks, we suspect Leipzig may opt to rest a few players, which will give Labbadia Bruno’s side a fighting chance.

Hertha Berlin – Bayern Munich (6/2/2019 – 20:45 CET)
It’s fair to say that Bayern are not the force they once were under Niko Kovac, though it would be harsh to blame the Croat for their lacklustre season thus far.
Bayern’s ageing squad is in need of freshening up, which may explain the Munich outfit’s well-documented pursuit of Chelsea’s eighteen-year-old winger, Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Kovac can’t afford to rest players and risk getting knocked out in the third round, so expect a lineup worthy of winning the match.

Copa del Rey
While the Germans get their cup campaigns underway, the Spanish are just about sorting out who will play in the final.
The Copa del Rey continues this week and we’ll be blessed with another double-dose of El Clasico.
Barcelona take on Real Madrid at the Nou Camp on Wednesday, while Real Betis host Valencia in the second semi-final on Thursday.
There’s no danger of managers playing weakened sides for these matches and with very little between the two sides in each match, were going to give the two home sides the advantage in these first legs with a boost.
