2019 World Men’s Handball Championship rundown

Just to clarify, this isn’t a look back at some of the most notorious handball’s of the year, like Marouane Fellaini’s injury-time winner vs Young Boys in the Champions League, or Alexandre Lacazette’s “assist” against Palace in the Premier League, we’re talking about Europe’s second-biggest sport, Handball, and the 2019 World Men’s Handball Championship!

Denmark and Germany is the destination for this year’s event which will take place between the 10th and 27th of January 2019.

Reigning Champions, France (3.50), will once again be in attendance as they attempt to get their mitt’s on a record 7th World title. The French Handball team is quite possibly the greatest national team in the history of the sport, holding all three titles at once (European, Olympic & World) on two separate occasions. Can ‘les Experts’ be taught a lesson this time around?

Pre-tournament Favourites

A quick look through the betting will paint a pretty clear picture as to who to keep an eye on in the earlier rounds. Naturally, the host for the tournament gets a home-field nudge up the order, which, coincidentally, has Denmark (3.25) edging out France by the odd point or two, making them the pre-tournament favourites.

The last time Germany (6.25) hosted this tournament back in 2007, they won it, defeating Spain (7.00), France and Poland on their way to the title.

Rounding off the top five pre-tournament favourites is 2017 runners-up, Norway (11.00), who will be hoping they can go one better this time around.

Group Stage Betting

If you’re looking for a quick return in the outrights, there’s definitely some value to be had in the Group Stage betting markets.

France (1.44) and Germany (2.65) head-up the betting for Group A: a group that includes Russia (34.00), Brazil (41.00), and a Unified Korea team (301.00).

Meanwhile, in Group B, Croatia (2.75) will need to chase down Spain (1.55) if they are to come out on top. Hopeful’s Iceland (15.00) and Macedonia (17.00) should be hot on their heels.

Group C looks pretty cut and dry with co-hosts Denmark (1.25) and Norway (3.20) leading the way. Outside chances for Tunisia and Austria at 51.00 could pay dividends should the favourites slip up.

A real chance to profit here should the favourites for Group D, Sweden (1.40), fall short, with Hungary (4.10), Qatar (9.00) and Egypt (15.00) ready to pounce.

Tournament Format

The format for the 2019 World Men’s Handball Championship will revert to the tried-and-tested structure used in the 2011 games.

Twenty-four teams will be split into four groups of six, of which the top three will advance to the main round.

The twelve advancing teams form a further two groups of six, carrying over points and goal difference earned from matches played against other advancing teams.

The top two teams from each group will then go on to play in the semi-finals and final.
