On the Rizk Radar: Boosts for the All-Star weekend

The FA Cup continues this weekend with the fifth round of the tournament. AFC Wimbledon welcomes Millwall to Kingsmeadow where the Crazy Gang very eloquently dispatched of a lacklustre West Ham in the last round.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace makes the journey to Doncaster and will see this as a fantastic opportunity to get to the final given that only two of the Premier League’s top six will remain after this round.

There’s a London derby between Watford and QPR, and an all-Championship tie in Swansea vs Brentford.

CHELSEA – MANCHESTER UNITED (FA CUP)

It appears ignition sequence has commenced at Stamford Bridge and that it could be just a matter of time before Maurizio Sarri feels the wrath of Roman Abramovich.

Chelsea succumbed to a 6-0 defeat when they visited Manchester last weekend, though, it was the noisy neighbours in Man City inflicting the damage, not the Red Devils.

Looking back over the last four domestic matches, the blues appear to be on a ‘win-one-lose-one’ run. If you’re the superstitious type, this would be a home win banker. It’s definitely not that straight-forward, but you’d expect a response from the London outfit, and recent results would suggest that’s what we’re going to get.

NEWPORT – MANCHESTER CITY (FA CUP)

Well, the fairytale of the FA Cup goes on for League Two Newport and as far as a cup tie goes for teams wallowing in the lower leagues of the English game, they don’t get much bigger than this.

The South Wales outfit, while hovering around mid-table in the league, has put together an impressive cup run that has seen them knock out the likes of Middlesbrough and Leicester.

It would be immoral of us to suggest that Michael Flynn’s side could get the better of Pep’s Posse, but if we had to clutch at straws to make a case for Newport (and we will), a Saturday evening game at frigid temperatures, on a pitch that is used for both Football and Rugby, would be our straw of choice.

NBA All-star game

This is about as close to the Harlem Globetrotters as you’ll get without actually watching the legendary show itself. Basketball’s biggest names will be taking part in a weekend packed with rim-rocking, net-shredding action.

The weekend gets underway with the Celebrity game: House-hold names including Chris Daughtry, Mike Colter (Who plays Luke Cage), and rapper Migos are just a few of the names that will be on show.

Probably one of the most entertaining and certainly creative elements of the All-Star weekend is the Slam Dunk Contest.

Bundesliga

This weekend’s action from Germany kicks off on Friday night with Bayern Munich taking on Augsburg. A win for the Bavarians will not only take them two points behind first-place Dortmund but will spark the type of anomaly Bundesliga fans have not seen in some time, an actual title race.

Probably the most entertaining match of the weekend sees fifth place Frankfurt take on third place Monchengladbach. Anything other than a win for Frankfurt will surely mean the end of their push for Champions League football next term, with RB Leipzig currently five points ahead and playing a spluttering Stuttgart on Saturday afternoon.

La Liga

Fifth place Getafe closed the gap to just two points on Sevilla last week. The Madrid-based outfit are hitting form at the right time of the season and find themselves within touching distance of the Champions League places – They travel to Eibar on Friday night.

Sixth vs seventh is definitely one to watch. The counter-attacking style of Alaves vs the possession stats of Real Betis should make for an intriguing match-up.

Alaves were the surprise package of the league at the turn of the year, but have since dropped off the pace and are now trying to find the form that saw them occupy the top four earlier on in the campaign.
