Stacking the Perfect Accumulator
We all remember the first time we threw together a 10-fold accumulator and drifted off into the abyss as we gawped at the potential returns.
Stringing together the ‘perfect acca’ is a fete few can lay claim to, but, thanks to the variety of markets available in today’s world of online sports betting, is not beyond the everyday punter.
In this article, you’ll find a few hints and tips to take with you into your next accumulator bet at Rizk Sportsbook.
What is an Accumulator?
For those unfamiliar with the term accumulator – otherwise known as acca – this type of bet consists of a minimum of four selections up to, well, whatever you want.
A single stake is applied to the bet, meaning all selections must win to see a return. Unlike placing a bunch of single’s, an accumulator takes the winnings from one selection and uses it for the next. This system is applied throughout all the selections, meaning the more winning choices you’ve made, the bigger the stake going onto the next leg, and the higher the return.
Accas, though, are really about the thrill. You’ll hear stories from your mates about how they were 5 minutes away from winning millions, if not for that dodgy penalty decision (chances are they were probably 20 minutes away from winning a few hundred, and it was a stonewall penalty!).
Is Bigger Always Better?
This is the million dollar question when talking about the size of your acca. Do you go for small stakes with 10+ selections, or a larger bet on a handful of matches?
Given that each match selected increases the risk of a losing leg, each choice you make will add to the potential earnings and will boost the overall odds at an exponential rate. The trick is to find a balance that fits within your budget, and desired returns.
Finding the sweet spot for your accas is important. You need to be sure that the amount you will win is worth the risk that you are taking. Since an acca of four or five selections will require a larger stake to see a healthy return, and anything over a 10-fold will be extremely difficult to hit, then seven to eight selections seems to be that middle ground in which opportunity meets possibility.
Backing seven to eight selections will give you some flexibility. You can always drop down to six selections and add a touch more to your stake, alternatively, you can go for nine selections at a lesser cost.
Do the Odds Matter in an Acca?
There’s a case that the Odds beyond eight or nine selections don’t really matter. This is, however, a potentially fatal attitude as far as your search for the perfect acca goes.
Paying attention to the odds could potentially save you from taking an unnecessary risk. For example, you throw Barcelona into your acca because, well, they’re playing at home against a team you’ve never heard of, so must be a banker, right?
Say the odds of Barca winning are 1.12. If the rest of your selections win, you stand to bag €500. If you add Barca to the mix and they also win, you’ll get €560. Do you really want to put the rest of your selections at risk for such a short increase when adding, say, Chelsea to beat Wolves at 1.78 would have returned €890?
Doing some homework prior to placing your acca is always advisable. An injury or suspension may have a significant impact on the result of the match.
Accumulator Must Have’s
It’s clear that ‘the perfect acca’ differs from player to player. For those with a stronger grasp of the leagues, stringing together a winnable 10-Fold acca is probably on-par with a 6 or 7-Fold set by the more casual punter.
Irrespective of your level of sports betting nous, here’s a few extra pointers that may be worth taking into consideration for next time:
Understand your limits. – Try to build accas that actually stand a chance of winning. It’s great looking down at a life-changing sum of money as your potential returns, but there’s a reason why it’s offering that much, and the reason is simple, it’s not going to win!
Be smart, and stop plotting how big your super-yacht is going to be after you win!
Choose wisely – Don’t add low odds for the sake of it. By all means, back a team, if you fancy them to get the job done, but don’t trust that low odds, means banker; it doesn’t!
Timing is everything. – Be sure to check when your matches are due to be played. There’s nothing worse than waiting for the following day for your last selection to be played. If this does happen to you, check out Rizk Sportsbook’s Cash Out feature! You may have an offer already on the table.
You’ll also want to be selective when backing the midday matches. Sure, it’s a great way to get a win under your belt ahead of the afternoon, but there’s nothing worse than having your day’s bets fall at the first hurdle.
The bit on the side
Approach derbies and cup games with caution. – In most cases, you can safely throw the form book out the window when it comes to a local derby. The same goes for cup matches where managers may tinker and give some of their key players a break.
It’s not all about winning! – Try to mix up your selections by making use of the different markets available. You don’t have to bet on who is going to win for every selection. Instead, go for an Over/Under or Both teams to score market.
