What is Poker

Poker is a broad term used to describe a collection of games that all feature slightly different rules. Poker games always involve playing cards and typically feature multiple betting rounds. It's unclear how long Poker has been played, but the game was popularised in the United States during the 19th Century.

Today, Texas Hold 'Em is the most popular form of Poker and is well known for its huge prize tournaments such as the World Series of Poker. Online Poker now has millions of players all over the and other versions of the game, such as Video Poker and Live Casino Hold 'Em, are also very popular.

Types of Poker

Popular types of Poker that you can play online include:
• Live Poker Online – Live Poker is one of the most exciting ways to enjoy this thrilling game. Instead of playing against a computer-controlled opponent, you play against a real dealer. The game is live-streamed to your device, and you can play whenever you like. Live Texas Hold 'Em Poker online is the most popular type.
• Texas Hold 'Em – Texas Hold 'Em is the game of Poker most people are familiar with. This version of the game is played between players, who each try and outdo each other to win the pot at the end of each round.
• Video Poker – Video Poker is the easiest version to play, and it's often compared to slots. You can play online, and your payout depends on the hand you create.
• Draw Poker – Draw Poker gives you more control over your hand, letting you discard cards you don't want in order to draw new ones.

How to Play Poker

The rules of Poker are fairly simple. All you need to do is create a better hand than your opponents. Whether you're playing against the casino or other players, the strategy is the same. The game starts off with the forced bet, known as the blind or ante. Cards are then dealt out to each of the players. In Texas Hold 'Em, two cards are dealt face down to each player. The first betting round then begins.

Players will need to fold or match the ante, and you can also raise your bet if you think you have a good hand. Next, the first of the community cards will be dealt. These are the cards in the centre of the table, which you will use with the cards you're dealt to make the best possible hand.

You'll need to either match the current bet to stay in the game or fold to end your round. Once all of the community cards are revealed, any remaining players then reveal their cards. The highest-ranking hand will win the pot, or in the event of a draw, the pot will be split.

Hand Rankings in Poker

To win a game of Poker, you need to have a better hand than your opponent. Hands are ranked according to their rarity, and if two equal hands are shown, the highest numbers win. The full rankings are as follows:
• Royal Flush – A Royal Flush is the highest-ranking hand possible, containing A, K, Q, J and 10 all in the same suit.
• Straight Flush – A straight flush is five cards in numerical sequence, all in the same suit. For example, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 and 5 are all diamonds.
• Four of a Kind – This hand contains four matching cards of the same rank. For example, four Js.
• Full House – A Full House is three matching cards with two matching cards. For example, three 6s and two 3s.
