What is Baccarat

Baccarat is a classic card game played at casinos, involving multiple 52 card decks of standard playing cards. The game is played between the player and the banker, and both compete to have the highest possible single digit hand. In other words, both the player and the dealer must try and get a nine, or as close to a nine as possible.

Over the years, multiple versions of Baccarat have emerged, including Punto Banco, Baccarat Banque and Chemin de Fer. Today, Punto Banco remains the most popular form of the game and is the most commonly found version at online casinos. It's normally just known as Baccarat and has the simplest ruleset.

How to Play Baccarat

The most commonly played version of Baccarat played at casinos around the world is Punto Banco. While it's usually still named Baccarat, it does differ in how it's played. Other versions of Baccarat are more complicated, and the player has a choice over their actions. However, in Punto Banco, actions are fixed. The upside is that in Punto Banco, you can choose to bet on your hand, the banker's hand or a tie.

Baccarat online starts with the betting option. You choose your stake and whether to go for a player win, banker win or a tie. Once you've chosen your bet, the game will deal cards to you and the banker. The aim of the game is to get a natural nine or to be as close to this as possible without going over. In Baccarat, cards from one to nine are worth their face value. Aces are worth one point while the King, Queen and Jack are worth zero.

Hand values in Baccarat online casino games can only be single digits. Any hand that goes into double digits will only use the second digit. For example, a hand with six and eight would be worth four. The dealer deals two cards face up to both hands, and the game is over if either has an eight or a nine. If not, the next action is taken automatically based on a series of rules.

If the player's hand has a value of between zero and five, a third card will be dealt to them. If the value is six or seven, they stand. If the player stands with just two cards, the banker follows the same rules.

However, the rules change if the player draws a third card. These new rules depend on the value of the player's third card as well as the banker's own total. The full rules are:

• If the banker total is 2 or less, then the banker draws a card, regardless of what the player's third card is.
• If the banker total is 3, then the banker draws a third card unless the player's third card was an 8.
• If the banker total is 4, then the banker draws a third card if the player's third card was 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
• If the banker total is 5, then the banker draws a third card if the player's third card was 4, 5, 6, or 7.
• If the banker total is 6, then the banker draws a third card if the player's third card was a 6 or 7.
• If the banker total is 7, then the banker stands.

Baccarat Odds

Baccarat online is different from many other casino games in that you can win even with a losing hand. Before the game begins, you have three main betting options, which are as follows:

• The player – Betting on the player is betting that your own hand will win. This offers a payout of 1:1 and has a chance of 44.62%
• The banker – Betting on the banker is betting that the banker's hand will win. This offers a payout of 1:1 too. However, you'll pay a 5% commission to the casino if successful. The chance of the banker winning is 45.86%.
• The tie – Betting on a tie is a bet that both the banker's and player's hands will be equal at the end of the round. This bet pays out 8:1 and has a 9.52% chance of occurring.

The player bet has a house edge of 1.24%, while the banker bet has a house edge of 1.06%. Meanwhile, the tie may pay out more, but it has a much higher house edge of 14.4%.
